SGSC Interns to Teachers Program

The Interns to Teacher Program was established to address the teacher shortage in our surrounding communities and is a competitive program in which preservice teachers enrolled in SGSC's Elementary and Special Education (ELE/SPED) teacher preparation program can be hired by school districts to be teachers of record during their senior year, and in some cases, their Junior year as well. Students interested in the program should apply in their second semester of their junior year. They will receive notification of their acceptance . Decisions are made by a committee including faculty and supervisors from South Georgia State College and leadership from school districts. Committee decisions are made based upon weighted scores from the completion of a rubric that includes an assessment of the applicant’s responses to essay questions within this application, review of the applicant’s GPA and past academic performance, responses from references, and past CAPS and dispositions scores. While teacher candidates may be provisionally admitted, participation requires that candidates pass the GACE content exams for their teaching field by the start of their internship.

They are supported and coached by a Mentor Teacher and a SGSC Supervisor. Students can contact any faculty member for the ELE/SPED Program for more information.
