Information Sessions To Be Held For SGSC’s Bachelor of Science Degree In Management Spring 2017 Cohort

South Georgia State College (SGSC) is pleased to announce the addition of a spring cohort for the Bachelor of Science in Management (BSM) degree. The new degree launched in August after approval from the University System of Georgia Board of Regents in March 2016.

Dr. Charles Smith, Chair of Business and Assistant Professor of Management, will host an information session to learn more on the BSM on Tuesday, September 27th from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in the Alumni House on the Douglas Campus and on Tuesday, October 4th from 5:00 – 6:00 pm in the President’s Dining Room in the James M. Dye Building on the Waycross Campus.

The degree is approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Thus, financial aid and SGSC Foundation scholarships are available. The spring 2017 priority deadline for financial aid is November 15, 2016, and the payment deadline is December 8, 2016.

“Today’s employers are looking for graduates with specific business skills, and our curriculum focuses around employer and industry needs,” comments Dr. Smith. He goes on to say, “Our program offers a curriculum focused on providing hands-on learning to expose students to the latest technology and prepare them for real world applications.”

SGSC has assembled a top-notch faculty who possess strong educational, professional and real-world experiences to teach this program. Below are some highlights of each faculty member’s vitae.

Dr. Smith will be teaching courses in Management, Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Finance.  In addition to teaching, Dr. Smith will have oversight and management responsibilities of the Bachelor of Science in Management degree program.   Smith earned his doctorate in Organization and Management from Capella University and a Master of Business Administration in finance from Dallas Baptist University.  He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Texas Wesleyan University. Smith was also selected to attend the Executive Management Program at Yale School of Management where he earned a certificate in Leadership and Team Effectiveness.  Smith has professional and industry expertise in the area of finance and accounting management and extensive business experience in the international market, which includes time in China and Europe negotiating acquisitions and mergers as well as facilitating the building of manufacturing plants. Smith spent over 25 years in the corporate world serving as chief financial officer for Ceradyne Inc.’s Thermo International Division, later joining Xerox's Southern Business Communications as chief financial officer. Previously, Smith had been the director of finance and controller for Computer Science Corporation, Intelcom Division. He was also treasury manager, auditing manager, and financial accounting manager for GTE Corporation.

Ms. Joan Zimmer is a faculty member currently teaching Principles of Management, Business Communication Strategies and will be teaching courses in Quality Management, Project Management and Applied Project in future terms.  Zimmer earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Xavier University and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. Currently, she owns and operates Zimmer Consultants, LLC, which specializes in process engineering, project management, Lean Six Sigma and facilitation.  The firm is currently engaged with several local organizations driving improvements, process development, and savings in the areas of Supply Chain, Operations and Process Optimization.   Ms. Zimmer has over 20 years of experience within diverse global organizations including General Electric, Accenture, Chiquita Brands and Ryder Systems spanning multiple functions including information technology, auditing, manufacturing, supply chain and research & development.  Having lived and worked in Europe, she is also skilled in developing and leading multi-functional and multi-cultural teams, and for much of her career has had accountability for multi-million dollar project portfolios and process improvement organizations across Central America, North America, and Europe.  Zimmer has her PMP certification, is a certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, and has mentored numerous Green Belt and Black Belt projects, saving over $35 million.  In addition, she has developed and delivered training on project management and Lean Sigma. 

Dr. Joseph Holloway is a faculty member currently teaching Planning and Supervision and will be teaching courses in Leadership Development, Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Human Behavior in Organizations in future terms.  Holloway earned a doctorate in Organization Leadership from Regent University, Master of Public Administration from Jacksonville State University, and Master of Science in Counseling and Psychology.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration degree from Auburn University.  Holloway is an executive leader with 10 years of human capital development and organizational leadership experience.  He has eight years directing the organizational development and profitable operations of a regional behavioral health organization, two years as a special education coordinator/department chair for a county school district, and substantial relevant experience in higher education.  Holloway is also a subject matter expert in Organizational Leadership, specializing in organizational assessment, design, change, and development; strategic communications; stakeholder engagement; leadership development; group/team dynamics; employee engagement; employee development; and all aspects of organization transformation and talent management. 

Dr. Cheryl Tatum is a faculty member currently teaching Management and Supervision and will be teaching courses in Sustainable Enterprise Planning, Professional Ethics, Negotiation, Diversity in Business, Developing and Managing Teams in future terms.  Tatum earned a doctorate in Business Administration from Argosy University.  She holds a Master of Business Administration in Operations Management and Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing from American Intercontinental University.  Tatum has over 23 years of business experience in the areas of leadership, strategic management, business operations, organizational management, business communications, globalization, and financial planning.  As Senior Project Manager at L.S. Technologies/Federal Aviation Administration, Dr. Tatum negotiated land and space leases which are billion dollar asset contracts, both domestic and international.  She managed project metrics and strategies to ensure the analysis, methodologies and trends were in compliance.
