Oftentimes during the holidays, it is easy to focus on the wants and needs of the little ones in our lives. This being said, the residents of nursing homes sometimes do not get many (if any) holiday gifts, and can even lack basic toiletries and clothing. For this year's SGSC Staff Council Holiday Giving, we decided to direct our efforts to those in nursing homes or rehab facilities. These residents are at higher risk for contracting the COVID-19 virus, and in many cases, have been unable to see or visit with friends or family for many months. We are partnering with Vista Park Health and Rehabilitation and Harborview Health Systems to provide gifts and necessities to these residents.

Gift Ideas and examples of current needs are listed on the flyer, but we are open to all donations of similar items. Harborview Health Systems has provided a Christmas List, available here, which lists the specific needs (with sizes) that their residents have.

Similar to previous holiday giving efforts, each department is invited to  gather items in their areas. We would like for each department to designate a box or area to collect items. All collected items should be delivered to the Engram Hall 1st Floor Conference Room (Douglas Campus) or to the STEM Center (Waycross Campus) no later than December 18, 2020 by 12:00 p.m.

Please contact SGSC Staff Council at staffcouncil@sgsc.edu with any questions or concerns.

November is the start of a joyous holiday season for most of us.  However, there are children living in our county and surrounding counties who are less fortunate than some of us and are in need of our service.  Coffee County alone has over 200 children who are currently in foster care, with only around 20 Foster homes available. Children who are not able to be placed in homes within their home county are placed in neighboring counties, which can affect potential parental visits. Join us in partnering with the Called to Care of Coffee County and Called to Care of Ware County to provide Stockings and Stocking Stuffers to our current foster care children. Children in care range from 0-17 years old, so small gifts for all ages are accepted, including $5-10 gift cards to fast food restaurants. Similar to recent toy/canned food drives, each department can gather items in their areas. We would like for each department to designate a box or area to collect items. All collected items should be delivered to the Engram Hall 1st Floor Conference Room or to the Cashier’s Window on the Waycross Campus no later than December 13, 2019 by 12:00 p.m.

Please join SGSC Staff Council in bidding on items that can be frozen and served to your family on Thanksgiving Day (but we won’t tell if you decide to snack on them early!).  25% of the auction’s proceeds will be donated to the Southern Georgia Area Agency on Aging (you may know them as Meals on Wheels) which will go towards feeding the elderly citizens of all 18 SGSC surrounding counties.

Students from the Boys and Girls club & the Mary Hayes Center will be trick-or-treating door to door on October 31, 2020 from 2-6 PM. If you wish to participate in giving out candy or in the 3rd Annual Door Decorating Contest, please reach out directly to SGSC Staff Council at staffcouncil@sgsc.edu.

Please join SGSC Staff Council in bidding on cakes, pies, and traybakes from some of the talented bakers right here at SGSC. The auction links will not be live until the dates and times listed. New auction items will be listed every day, and all winning bids must be picked up on the date they are won.

Mark your calendars for an important event during National Suicide Prevention Month: QPR Training. Dr. Joseph Holloway will walk you through the basics of using QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) to assist friends, students, or family members who may be suffering from depression or suicidal ideation. This training will be offered on the Douglas Campus on September 10 from 2-3 PM and on the Waycross Campus on September 26 from 2-3 PM. Light snacks will be provided and questions are welcomed! Hope to see you there!

Dr. Joseph Holloway will be wading through the difficult waters of recognizing red flags in students and how best to assist them. Please join us in this open discussion of student issues and how to get them the help they may need. Dr. Holloway will be answering tough questions, such as "When should I contact Campus police?" and "What are some of the signs of depression in students?". This training, sponsored by SGSC Staff Council, will be offered to any faculty and staff interested during the week of Convocation, 2019. Please sign up for this event using the Google Form, and make sure to include any issues or questions you have that you would like to be addressed.
