Posted on Sep 25, 2015

The South Georgia State College women’s soccer team is undefeated thus far in the 2015 season (5-0).

The team began its season at home against Georgia Military College. Laura Parsley scored a goal in the first half and kicked the second point of the game in the second half. Abby Cuneo, Melissa Carpenter, and Shanelle Fredrick each scored a goal in the second half to make the final score 5-2 over the Bulldogs.

The Lady Hawks took their game on the road to face Andrew College. Carpenter and Fredrick scored two goals apiece in the first quarter to beat the Fighting Tigers. The next day, the team traveled to Gordon State College to take on the Highlanders. The Lady Hawks again triumphed on the road with a final score of 2-0. Carpenter and Jordan Bernard scored the only two goals of the game.

Defending their home turf has not been a problem so far for the Lady Hawks. The team beat the ABAC Stallions 8-0. Parsley started off the game with a goal in the first quarter followed by two goals by Cuneo. The Lady Hawks had a strong second quarter with five goals – Fredrick (2), Parsley (1), Carpenter (1), and Jenna Corley (1).

The Lady Hawks then traveled to Polk State College in Lakeland, Fla. to face the Eagles. Parsley, Fredrick, and Bailey Pickering each scored a goal to earn the Lady Hawks another victory.

SGSC coach Ben Horner is pleased with the women’s progress so far. He stated, “Our girls are working hard on fitness to keep up their intensity on the field. We need to work on our finishing, but once we have that, we will be able to play with the best teams out there.”

The Lady Hawks are back in action this weekend. The team will look to extend its undefeated record today at 5 p.m. against region rival Darton State. The Lady Hawks will then face the Highlanders of Gordon State College on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m.
