Posted on Apr 06, 2026
Brice Marchman and Tanner Langley homered in the South Georgia State College Hawks’ 7-5 loss to the #15-ranked Georgia Highlands College Chargers Tuesday at Crider Field on the SGSC campus.
The Hawks took a 3-0 lead in the first on solo homers by Marchman and Langley. They also scored a run on an RBI groundout by Steven Tavares-Batista. That was the last time a Hawk would cross home plate until the bottom of the ninth. Marchman led off the ninth with a double then scored when Cole Rambler singled. Rambler made it home on a 9-3-2 double play; he scored ahead of Payton Bryant, who was thrown out attempting to score.
The Chargers, meanwhile, scored most of their runs in the seventh. They got on the board with a single run in the fifth. Then they plated five in the seventh and another in the ninth to win 7-5.
Langley, Marchman, and Bryant each had two hits. Marchman scored twice.
A trio of SGSC pitchers saw action Tuesday with starter Luke Smith taking the loss. He threw six innings and gave up five runs (all earned) on 10 hits while striking out four. He didn’t walk anyone. Hayden Gmerek (2 1/3 innings) and Blake Hughes (2/3 of an inning) also made appearances.
The Hawks are 23-16 overall and 5-6 in conference play. They are currently in third place behind Georgia Highlands and Gordon State. They travel to Cartersville for a three-game set against the Chargers this weekend – one game on Friday then a Saturday doubleheader.
