SGSC Sweeps Chick-Fil-A Christmas College Classic

Posted on Dec 09, 2018

South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball team withstood an avalanche of three-point shots Saturday afternoon to pull away from Combine Academy Charlotte 87-73 and sweep the annual Chick-Fil-A Christmas College Classic in Waycross.

The Hawks (7-5) built a 27-10 lead in the first half before Combine outscored SGSC 26-12 to trail only 39-36 at halftime. A majority of Combine’s scoring during that run came from behind the three-point line (10-for-28, 35.7 percent). Combine attempted 57 three-pointers for the game and connected on 17 of them.

Another stat that kept things close was at the free throw line. The Hawks attempted 37 shots and only made 18 for the game (48.6 percent).

“We stayed calm today and certainly weathered the storm,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. “But, we have some work to do as a team to make ourselves better.”

Keyshaun Street led the Hawks with 18 points, followed by Skyler Baggs with 17 and Charles Botchway with 15. Botchway grabbed nine rebounds and dished out seven assists.

The Hawks will continue their longest homestand of the season Tuesday night against USC-Salkehatchie. Tip for the game is set for 7 p.m.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
