SGSC Basketball Sweeps Applebee’s Classic; Davis Named GCAA Player Of The Week

South Georgia State College won both games of the 10th annual Applebee’s Okefenokee College Classic this past weekend on SGSC’s Waycross Campus. In addition, Kyric Davis (right photo) was named the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

The Hawks (3-2) took advantage of strong shooting Friday to defeat the Wake Technical Community College Eagles 80-63. Davis led SGSC with 22 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jamon Mangusho had 17 points, followed by Yannis Woods with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocked shots.

SGSC shot 52.8 percent from the field and 60 percent from behind the three-point line. The Hawks missed only two free throws (88.2 percent) the entire game.

Three SGSC players scored in double figures Saturday as the Hawks defeated the Polk State College Eagles 71-64. Woods led the Hawks with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Davis had 22 points and eight rebounds, while Jo Jo Bell finished with 21 points.

Player selections to the All-Classic team included Kayjay Harper and Trent Gerald (Wake Tech), Amon McDowell and Zaharius Baker (East Georgia State), Dominick Nelson and Cole White (Polk State), and Davis and Woods (SGSC). East Georgia State was the fourth team to play in this year’s Classic.

Davis, a 6’5” sophomore from Americus, Ga., averaged 22 points, eight rebounds, two assists, 1.5 blocks, and 2.5 steals during the Classic to earn GCAA Player of the Week honors.

The Hawks begin a five-game road trip Tuesday, Nov. 21 before returning to Waycross Tuesday, Dec. 12 for a non-conference matchup with Santa Fe College. Tip for the Dec. 12 game is set for 7 p.m.

The SGSC athletic department has announced a change in ticket pricing for home basketball games. All regular season home games are now $7 with children five and under admitted free.
