Hawks Basketball Holds Off Highlanders To Win Sixth Straight

The No. 25 South Georgia State College Hawks held off an upset bid by Gordon State Thursday night, defeating the Highlanders 61-56. It was the conference opener for both teams, and the win extends SGSC’s current winning streak to six games.

Both teams struggled for points in the first half. The Hawks (14-1, 1-0) led 14-13 with six minutes left until halftime and outscored the Highlanders 17-7 to take a 31-20 lead into the locker room.

The Highlanders cut the lead to five points on three different occasions in the second half. They got as close as three points (59-56) with 32.7 seconds left in regulation before Antonio Vendola made two free throws for the game’s final points.

Vendola and Marquise Jackson led the Hawks with 13 points, and Vendola had four steals.

The Hawks will try to extend their winning streak Saturday afternoon in another conference matchup against East Georgia State. Tip for the game is set for 4 p.m.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
