Hawks Fall To Georgia Highlands In GCAA Semifinals

ROME, GA. - The South Georgia State College Hawks went toe-to-toe with the top-seed Georgia Highlands Chargers Friday night in the GCAA semifinals before the Chargers pulled away in the second half to win 101-91.

“I was extremely proud of our team’s effort and focus Friday night,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.

The Hawks (22-10) and Chargers were tied 43-43 at halftime, and the Hawks built a six-point lead at one point in the second half.

Zaquavian Smith led the Hawks with 23 points. Smith finished his SGSC career as the second-leading scorer in program history and 15 points shy of hitting the 1,000 point mark.

O’Showen Williams had 22 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Nate Louis finished with 15 points, while Khalil Abdullah had 11 points and six rebounds.

Despite the loss, the Hawks have won an impressive total of 74 games over the last three seasons.

After defeating the Hawks in the semifinals, the Chargers captured the GCAA Cham-pionship and a berth in the NJCAA Tournament with a 99-80 win over seventh-seed South Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon.
