The No. 17 South Georgia State College Hawks utilized a 14-4 run midway through the second half Wednesday night to survive an upset bid by East Georgia State, defeating the Bobcats, 89-75.

The win extends the Hawks’ (17-1, 6-0) current winning streak to 12 games and keeps them atop the GCAA Conference.

“We forced 11 turnovers in the second half, and some of them were during that big run,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.  “That was the turning point in the game.”

Prior to the scoring run, the teams endured 16 ties and 19 lead changes.

Jovante’ Spivey once again led all scorers with 23 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Cody Helgeland had 21 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.  Daniel Peace rounded out the top scorers with another complete game of 12 points, three rebounds, eight assists, and six steals.

Wednesday night’s win sets up a conference showdown Saturday afternoon when SGSC travels to Macon, Ga. to face the Central Georgia Tech Titans.  The Titans are currently tied for second in the conference with Georgia Highlands.

The Hawks return home Saturday, Jan. 24 for another conference game against Gordon State.  Tip for the game is set for 4 p.m.  General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
